When should I hire an electrician instead of doing it myself?

Asked May 12, 2026 by a contractor in Electrical (Handyman Mod)

What electrical work is safe to DIY, and where's the line where I should always call a licensed electrician?

Swapping a like-for-like light fixture or outlet is DIY for many people (power off, confirm with a tester). Hire a licensed electrician for anything involving the panel, new circuits, aluminum wiring, GFCI/AFCI code work, or anything you're unsure about. Electrical mistakes cause fires and fail inspections — when in doubt, hire it out.
