Repair if the roof is under ~15 years old and the damage is localized (a few missing shingles, one leak). Replace if it's near end of life, has widespread granule loss, sagging, or repeated leaks — patching an old roof throws good money after bad. A reputable roofer will show you photos and give you both options with costs.
