How do I patch a hole in drywall?

Asked May 25, 2026 by a contractor in Drywall and Plastering (Handyman Mod)

Doorknob put a hole in the wall. What's the easiest way to patch and paint it so it disappears?

Small holes: use a self-adhesive mesh patch, cover with joint compound, feather the edges, let dry, sand smooth, and paint. Larger holes need a drywall patch piece backed by wood or a California patch. Two–three thin coats of compound beat one thick one. Prime before painting so the patch doesn't flash through. It's a very beginner-friendly repair.
