    Small holes: use a self-adhesive mesh patch, cover with joint compound, feather the edges, let dry, sand smooth, and paint. Larger holes need a drywall patch piece backed by wood or a California patch. Two–three thin coats of compound beat one thick one. Prime before painting so the patch doesn't flash through. It's a very beginner-friendly repair.
