How do I make a bathroom safe for aging in place?

Asked May 24, 2026 by a contractor in Bathroom Remodeling (Handyman Mod)

Updating a bathroom for an older parent. What changes matter most — grab bars, curbless showers, anything else?

Top priorities: grab bars anchored to studs (not just drywall), a curbless or low-threshold shower, a handheld showerhead, a comfort-height toilet, and slip-resistant flooring. Good lighting and lever-style handles help too. Grab bars need proper blocking behind the wall, so it's worth having a pro install them correctly for safety.
