How do I fix a running toilet?

Asked June 14, 2026 by a contractor in Plumbing (Handyman Mod)

Toilet keeps running long after flushing. What's usually the cause and how do I fix it myself?

A toilet that keeps running is usually the flapper (worn/warped) or the fill valve. Take the tank lid off and watch: if water trickles into the bowl, replace the flapper; if it keeps filling, adjust or replace the fill valve and check the float height. Both are cheap parts and a 15–20 minute fix. If the tank cracks or the shutoff leaks, call a plumber.
